Hesperide illuminated pergola Warm Ambiance

When the sun goes down, the garden reveals itself differently. Colors become more discreet, materials take on relief, silhouettes become graphic. And this is often where the magic happens: a few well-placed points of light are enough to transform a terrace into an evening refuge. The outdoors can continue to live on after the day is over - provided it's lit with intention. Because night is not just a setting: it's also a vital space for many species. Our lighting choices can therefore create a warm atmosphere, while preserving biodiversity.

Beautiful outdoor lighting doesn't try to make a statement. It composes, suggests and reassures. The most beautiful atmospheres rarely come from a single, strong source: they're created by adding small lights in the right places.
The detail that makes all the difference: choose warm over cool lighting, which enhances natural materials (wood, rattan, textiles) and creates a warmer ambience.

Lighting garlands: the art of creating atmosphere

Garlands are a simple way to create an immediate effect. It structures space without overpowering it: high up, it creates a soft «arch»; along a pergola, it emphasizes lines; on a railing, it brings a more intimate light.

Lanterns and photophores, points of light that give relief

If the garland draws the space, the lantern dresses the night. It exists even when switched off, then becomes a hot spot when the light comes on. On a table, near an outdoor sofa, at the foot of a clump of trees: you immediately get a warm, subdued effect.

Often, two or three pieces of light of different sizes are all that's needed to add drama without the risk of over-lighting and losing the charm of the night. The idea is not to add light everywhere, but to create a few hot spots, where you live the evening.

Beaconing without aggression: gently lighting traffic areas

The «useful» lighting of your steps, walkways and various interior access points can quickly become very bright. Solar-powered beacons and small lamps dedicated to pathways allow a gentle approach, placing light flush with the ground, where it's really needed.

There's nothing more important for safety than to mark the layout of a driveway: every two or three meters is usually enough to get your bearings.

When light is discreet: a gesture for biodiversity

It's easy to forget that many species feed and reproduce at night. The French Office for Biodiversity reminds us that when we light up «everywhere, all the time», we disrupt the world and habits of nocturnal species, with effects on their feeding and reproduction in particular.1.

The aim is to maintain pleasant spaces, without over-lighting and damaging biodiversity. To achieve this, there are a few good habits to adopt.

Light only the living areas: terrace, dining area, entrance, garden furniture. Leaving the rest of the house in pleasant half-light is also a way of preserving the night.
Think about times: opt for a bright atmosphere for dinner, and remember to turn off the lights when you get home.
Avoid lighting towards the sky or plants as much as possible.2.

Compose your night scene: a three-act method

To build a coherent, luminous backdrop, you can imagine your exterior as a three-tiered stage.

  1. Height: a garland to set the mood (above the meal, on a pergola, between two hanging points).
  2. Volumes: lanterns and candleholders for warm, decorative «material» lighting.
  3. The path: a few discreet markers to guide you, without over-lighting.

Successful outdoor lighting lets you enjoy your garden even in the evening, while leaving the night untouched where it doesn't need you. A few well-chosen points of light are all it takes to create an enveloping atmosphere, while respecting the nightlife that is also part of the garden's charm.
